So we had our first full week of summer and it was very
summer-like as we spent a lot of hours at my parents pool. Especially since
some of my sisters and cousins were in town for most of the week. Monday night
we had some of them over for dinner and Andrew grilled steaks. After dinner,
they all went out back to play and the twins had to show everyone how they
could ride their bikes. The kids ended up planning a couple sleepovers. Briley
and Baylor were both going to spend the night at our house, but then once the
girls found out the boys were staying, they decided to go to my parents. The
boys’ sleepover was pretty subdued. They got a few snacks and we got them all
set up in the basement. They played in the playroom for a little bit and then
we turned on Big Hero Six and they all went to sleep.
Kaitlin and her kids and Lissy came into town during the
week too. So that meant more sleepovers at Grandma and Papa’s. The kids did
spend a couple nights at home, which they were bummed about. And I got out for
a few runs outside, but didn’t get a bike ride outside until Saturday morning.
Jackson had basketball camp with the high school team in the mornings and I
would rush around trying to get stuff done around the house before heading over
to my parents to swim. One time after picking him up, I had to get my tire
fixed and he asked if could just walk to my parents instead of waiting with me
while they fixed the tire. I let him and he was pretty happy that I trusted him
and he made it there safely. We had quite a few ballgames throughout the week
and the kids had some great fans cheering them on at some of their games. And we spent a little time at the YMCA playground.
We all got to have some bonding time with Emmie since she
was here all week. Ellie, of course, loved all of it. She grew on Jackson too
and he had to tote her around sometimes. She wasn’t crazy about Andrew at
first, but then he shared his dinner with her and she was all good.
We had two big goals for the twins this summer and they
have already knocked them out of the park. The first was to learn how to ride
their bikes and that was very easy and they are still enjoying every chance
they get to ride their bikes. The second goal was to learn to swim without
their puddle jumpers. Well, their older siblings took it upon themselves to
help them with that this past week and worked with them and they are doing
amazing. I thought it was going to take a while, but they pretty much have it
down. Lissy helped them out too and now they can swim short lengths underwater
and they love to dive for things in the shallow end. They still aren’t too
strong with it and need to be watched carefully, but they are well on their way
and are loving it.
Friday ended up being a busy day. Andrew took the three
oldest out to the ranch with him in the morning and they gathered and worked
his calves. The twins and I were supposed to bring them lunch for when they
were done. I cut up a watermelon the night before and got a bunch of drinks. We
loaded all of that up and then went to Hy-Vee and picked up some fried chicken
and sides I had ordered and took it out to Andrew’s pasture. They were just
finishing up when we got there, so it was pretty good timing. Ellie and Jackson
both got to get in on holding tails and Jackson helped with the pour on.
We had quite a few leftovers, so we headed to my parents’
house when we got in town because I knew my dad was on lunch break and would
appreciate them. Then the kids swam for a little bit before we headed home to
get ready for ballgames. We had three games that night but ended up skipping
the twins so we could eat with my family for my parents’ 44th
anniversary. Ellie’s game was at 5:15
and she did a great job. Got a couple good hits and played first and short
stop. It was a hot one though. The twins spent the first part of it moving their
chairs around trying to find shade. We ended up pulling Ellie before the bottom
of the final inning of her game since it was already 6:40 and our reservations
for dinner were at 7. Plus we still had to go home and quickly change since we
were all sweaty messes. Jackson still had a game at 7:30 and since they barely
have enough players as it is, we figured he shouldn’t skip out.
After a quick change, we made it to Macon around 7:30 and
the others were waiting for us with onion rings and we ordered soon after. We
enjoyed a yummy dinner and Miles even impressed us by putting his napkin in his
lap and using a fork and knife to cut his food. And we finished up with wedding
cake and a sparkler to celebrate my parents’ anniversary.
Andrew and the kids went out to the ranch again Saturday
morning and I did my bike ride and then we went to my parents for one last swim
of the week. My parents left that evening for a little trip to Georgia and we
had Caroline, Emmie and Molly over for dinner before Caroline and Emmie headed
home the next day. Emmie started to really like Buddy and I think Buddy
tolerated her 😊. We finished out the week by going to church
on Sunday and I spent most of the day catching up on laundry and cleaning while the kids went to the office for a
little bit and then spent the afternoon playing with friends. The learned to
modified beyblades out of Magformers and played with them for a quite a while.
Then the twins, Ellie and I played some Candyland and the twins are learning
about winning and losing. We had dinner, I did some office work and we spent
some time outside as it cooled down. Jackson got out his Capture the Flag Redux
and the kids played several rounds until we called it a night around 10pm.
Several of them had basketball camp the next day, so we had to get them to bed.
