Catching Up...multiple meanings

Last week was the last hurrah for the remainder of our summer activities. Jackson got in one last time mowing before Matt comes back from school. With the dry summer, he only mowed 6 times. Ellie had swim practice that night. Then on Tuesday, Jackson and Ellie had basketball in the morning and that evening, Ellie had swim team and Lincoln had soccer. During the afternoon, we surprised Ellie with her phone. It was my old phone and I got it all set up while she was at camp. I put it up in her room while she was out and then had Lissy call it. She was so excited! She talked to Lissy for a little bit with a big smile on her face and jumping around. When she got off with Lissy, she read the rules aloud for me and called Andrew to thank him too. And so it begins.

We did some catching up with cleaning and cooking. I made a kamp coffee cake for all of them and then also made snickerdoodles, lemon cookies and chocolate chip cookies for the big, free dental clinic they were doing in town over the weekend. I was able to put a few back for the family, so they were excited.

That evening, after soccer and swim team, I took the kids to the new shaved ice truck in the Westlakes parking lot. It is a fun thing to have in town now.

Sara and her kids came into town on Wednesday, so we spent most of our time over there. We had some hot weather, so a lot of time was spent around the pool, whether it was swimming, relaxing and eating ice cream, dancing and hanging out with Holly.

All but Jackson spent the night Wednesday night, so Jackson got to help me Thursday morning. I went for a run and then we were supposed to meet over at Pershing to drop off the cookies and water and help set up some stuff for the dental clinic. I hadn't even showered yet, when I got a message that they were ready for me to help set up. While, I should have just went then, I jumped in the shower, quickly rinsed off and then we were on our way. They had a lot done when we got there, so we just helped set out chairs. Then in the main gym, they asked us to put together some of the dental chairs, but we each did one and then they were all done. They were at a lull at that moment, so we waited for a bit and talked to a few people, before deciding to just go ahead and leave. We picked up more ice cream for my parents house and some McDonalds for everyone and went over there. Ellie was excited to show me the braids she did on Bella that morning.

They swam for a little bit and then we went to see Hotel Transylvania 3. We had the theater totally to ourselves until another small group came in, so of course they spread out.

I got a text partway through asking for me to meet my mom in the lobby because she had Briley, Baylor and Finley. They came back early as a surprise so that they could see Sara and the kids. Then after we got them situated, I realized that the movie wouldn't be done in time to get Lincoln to soccer practice. Plus, I took his shin guards to my parents and they were still there although his cleats were in the car. After trying to get a hold of Andrew (he was out on a ride) and my parents, I ended up pulling him from the movie early, running by the house to get an extra pair of shin guards and getting him to practice a little late. Then I swung back by the theater and they had just finished up, so some of the kids got in my house and we went back to my parents. I called Andrew to see if he could pick up Lincoln from practice and that is when he informed me that he had a bike wreck (he had just bought a new mountain bike at Cyclex the day before and took it out on it's maiden ride on the paths around 1000 Hills) trying to hop over a log and was in quite a bit of pain. He did manage to bike the 15 miles back to the house. So, I was in charge of picking up Lincoln. I did get to watch a little bit of his practice and he was doing a great job. He was really getting in there, playing hard and smart. And he was rewarded in the end when they surprised the hardest working player at practice with a new soccer ball-and it was Lincoln. He was so excited. We couldn't celebrate too much though, as we had to head home and check on Andrew.

He was in bed and you could tell he was in quite a bit of pain with any type of movement. My parents brought our kids home and all the cousins came to try out the ninja course and my dad checked on Andrew. Everything sounded okay, so we were relieved there wasn't a punctured lung or internal bleeding and we made plans to do x-rays at the office on Friday. Then all the kids went back to my parents' house for a sleepover and I made sure Andrew had everything he needed to try to get some sleep.

The next morning, Andrew had to go to a short trial. I helped him get out of bed and get ready and then I went for a run with the plan to meet him at my dad's office at 9:30. After the run, I got a call from Leah, who was working at the dental clinic, and she asked if Jackson could get some drone footage of the line. So, I woke him up and we went over to Barnett Hall where we were able to park easily and get some decent footage. He took some videos and photos and we were about ready to get some inside, when they decided they didn't want to risk messing with the plastic tubing they had set up for their make-shift air conditioning. Which was okay, because I was running late getting ready.

Andrew got done a little early, so I was late getting there in time. They had done one x-ray and were working on another one when I got there. And there was a definite break of one rib and then one that was a bit hidden. But just like my fractured pelvis, there wasn't much to do about it.

He ended up going back to the office for several hours before coming home and resting. I worked on making some more cookies and trying to get the house cleaned (Jackson helped me out a lot) since my friend, Patricia, and her mom and kids were coming for a visit. They ended up being a little later than they had planned. Andrew stayed upright so he could visit with them for a little bit. I got to meet all of her kids and she met all of ours. It was crazy that the last time we saw each other was almost 17 years ago at my wedding. She was newly pregnant, with her twin girls who are now 16. Patricia was just how I remembered her and it was so great to see her mom, Karen, too. We visited at our house for a while and the kids played on the ninja course, before we told Andrew goodbye and went to my parents. Patricia had requested Pagliai's, so I ordered that on the way. The kids swam and played in the yard while we visited and visited...until 10:30, when we knew we had to call it quits as the kids were all tired and Ellie and I had an early morning on Saturday. I hated to give up, but I was exhausted from little sleep the night before too. It was so wonderful visiting with them.

And the next morning came quickly as Ellie and I left for Quincy around 6:30. We were headed to the championship meet an their warmups were around 8:30. It was a very large meet, so we made our way through the crowd to find the spot designated for our team. We didn't bring any shade, so we toughed it out in the sun for the next 4 1/2 hours. Ellie did three events since they didn't have enough kids in her age group for relays. Her 50 back looked great except for her turn. She was still able to shave a second off of her time and I think it could have been several seconds more if her turn was better. But then she was really disappointed with her 100 free. It was several seconds slower and her coach thought part of it was that she went really deep on her flip turns. It took her a while to mentally recover from that race, but then she was all ready for the 50 free. And she did great, getting first place in her heat. Then she went off the high dive a couple times before we headed home.

Andrew had kept all the kids at home while we were gone and I think it went pretty well for him, although his pain level was still about the same. I was so exhausted when we got home though, that I laid down for 15 minutes to regroup before taking the kids over to my parents. Sara and her kids left Friday afternoon, but my parents picked up the Taylor kids Saturday afternoon, so along with the Early's, there were still a lot of kids to play with. Kaitlin and Zane were on a little getaway, so my parents were watching their kids. That evening was Finley's birthday party, so we all got to celebrate with her at her princess party. Andrew even came over for a little bit. And after the party, we were all so happy to get home and go to bed.

Sunday morning, I took the kids to church while Andrew went to the office. He was nervous about people touching him and trying to get comfortable during the service. Afterwards, while I went grocery shopping, these guys worked on creating a world in Minecraft for all of their cousins.

That afternoon, we went to my parents to swim again with all the kids before Andy and Autumn headed home. That evening we went out to the Truschingers. We hadn't seen them in quite a while, but I got a text from Amanda the day before wondering if I had the same number and then I got a call from my little sis in my sorority, Christy, inviting me to the Truschingers for a dinner and presentation. She and her husband are missionaries in Northern Africa and have lived there for 8 years with their 5 kids. I had not seen her since college and I have always been intrigued by their work, so Andrew and the kids joined me and we went out there. It was good to see Amanda, Brian and Christy again and meet Christy's husband and kids. We had dinner and then the kids went outside to play while Christy and her husband did their presentation for us on what they are doing. It is neat to see how God is using them and their excitement for what they are doing. I did feel bad for keeping Andrew there for so long though as I could tell he was hurting. And he was definitely ready to go by the time they were finished. I was grateful he was even willing to go though. Christy and her family will be heading back to their mission field soon and probably won't be back in the states for another couple years. I really wish we had gotten a picture together.
