And Just Like That...Summer is Over

As I write this, I'm sitting in the pick-up line at Ray Miller yet again, although this time is for Lincoln. Summer flew by and we enjoyed our last full week of it by not having any practices or games. It was so nice. Jackson and Ellie did have their last basketball workout with the Truman players on Tuesday morning, but the one who was supposed to do it the last day didn't show up. Lauren coming over to hang out with Ellie while Annie was in town for a couple hours and she conveniently packed some clothes for a sleepover, so that happened too. We went to my parents to swim for a little bit because my parents were babysitting in the Taylor kids. And Ellie and Lauren put the hammocks up on the ninja course and "hung" out there too. That night they decided they wanted to watch Jaws and thought they may follow it up with Jaws 2 since they were on Prime. I guess after the first one, they decided to watch something different on how to do different hair styles :-).

Our small construction crew of two showed up Monday morning to get to work on replacing our back door and getting electricity out to the shed along with putting in lights and outlets. It all went well and they were done with it by Thursday. And we love our new door. Even the neighbor kids commented on how nice it was since they have had to battle our old one for years.

Lincoln and the twins got to go to the movie with Ty. I was excited about that because they went to see Teen Titans Go to the Movies, which was a movie they really wanted to see, but I didn't.

On Wednesday, we went to Chillicothe to their aquatic center with the Seedorfs. Jackson also had Joe come along with him. We stopped at McDonalds in Macon for lunch and got to the aquatic center around 12:30 and it was already busy. We were luckily able to find a couple chairs and the kids were excited to try everything out. They tried out the lazy river first and then the slides. They also had fun on the high dive, rock climbing wall and log roll. The twins enjoyed the area for the little kids too. I went on the lazy river a few times with the younger boys and joined Miles and Bennett on the tube slide, which they thought was a lot of fun. We headed home close to 4 and made our way be the Primary and Ray Miller to see the teacher postings. The twins were excited to see that they had Lincoln's first grade teacher, Mrs. Banner. And I was happy to see that Lincoln got Mrs. Peck and he was happy to see a few friends in his class.

Jackson got to pick up his schedule and locker info on that Thursday. He doesn't let much bother him and while he wasn't excited about one teacher he had for two classes, he just rolled with it. When we got home, the delivery guy was there with the rubber tiles for the ninja course. The end of our driveway was the furthest he could get them and they sat there until that evening. My parents came over (against our pleadings not to) and brought a trailer with them so we all loaded the mats up on the trailer and took them to the backyard to unload them on the basketball court. I was very grateful for their help since Andrew is still out of commission. He even has to watch how much he laughs because it can hurt pretty bad.

On Friday, Ellie finally got to have the sleepover she had been hoping for all summer. She had Lydia, Ella, Lauren and Madison over. They started by making bookmarks out of glue and glitter...outside. Then they went on bike rides and played on the ninja course until the pizza came for dinner. The neighborhood kids were all playing outside for the evening, so they joined in, which meant their swimming at my parents was pushed off until later. We didn't head over there until about 9:45. They had a lot of fun, but I did have to tell them to quiet down since it was so late.

Back home, they got settled in the basement and it took quite a while to decide on a movie. Some of the girls wanted to watch Jaws, but I helped Ellie out by saying no. After much indecision, they ended up with Sandlot. The next morning, Andrew and the boys headed out to the ranch while I went for a run and the girls slept in. I had muffins and donuts for them when they woke up and they started going home around 10:30.  When Lincoln got back from the ranch, I took him out to a friends birthday party. It was a Nerf battle party with a slip-n-slide, so he had a great time. That evening, we had Andrew's family in to celebrate Tom and Mary's anniversary. Andrew decided we would just order Colton's, so we did that and I made a Kanakuk coffee cake for dessert. The kids had a lot of fun on the ninja course and then headed out front to ride bikes and scooters.

Sunday we went to church and the grocery store. We stocked up on a few more school supplies and went shopping for football cleats and basketball shoes. We also had to stop by the pool and add some shock, water and scrub it out since my parents were out of town for several days and we were planning a pool party the next day. It looked like it was going to be the last sunny day we had before school started. So, we had some friends over and enjoyed the pool one last time before we headed back to school. The only picture I got of it though, was Jackson sitting on top of the arbor before everyone showed up. He didn't do much since he started football practice that afternoon.

On Tuesday, Ellie had 6th grade orientation and got to pick up her schedule. They had all the 6th graders there at one, and since she has over 200 kids in her class, it was pretty crowded. But she got to hear from the principal and guidance counselor before picking up her schedule and making her way through the crowded hallways to find her locker and her classrooms. She did a good job with her locker and practiced several times. She also put away her supplies and put up her locker decorations. She got to meet her teachers and while her three close friends ended up on a different team than her, she was happy to find out some of her other friends were on her team. She also switched up teams for math class since she was doing Advanced Math and ended up with Lauren in her class. The guidance counselor did end up calling me to see if Ellie would want to be an office assistant but then realized she had her RAP class during the period she would need her.

Later that afternoon, the twins and I took Lincoln to Ray Miller to meet Mrs. Peck. They did things different this year and had all the grades come at the same time. Again, it was crazy and there was a long line outside the school. We were in luck when they also opened the second door, which we were right by, so we got right in. Lincoln got to meet Mrs. Peck and put his supplies away. His friends, Josh and Aven came in while we were there too. Then when we got home, it was time to turn around and take Ellie to the 6th grade luau. The twins got their chance to meet Mrs. Banner on Wednesday. After I finished filling out all of the paperwork (all the paperwork for 5 kids at school takes a lot of time), we headed back to the room and the found their desks were in the same grouping and were excited to see that Mrs. Banner had little stuffed dogs on their desks for them. They got to meet Mrs. Banner, put their supplies away and look around the room. Lincoln came with us to show them the ropes and then he wanted to stop by Mrs. Meintz class and say hi to her before we left.

On the way home, we stopped by Dairy Queen and picked up an ice cream cake for our Back to School dinner. The kids played with their friends for their last day. But I also made them work and we cleaned out closets and dressers. Then I decorated for our dinner and started cooking. We had the same as the last couple years, lemon chicken, lemon broccoli, baked potatoes and rolls along with the ice cream cake. We used the Kanakuk theme for our theme for the year, Reignited, from 2 Timothy 1:6, "Reignite the gift of God that is in you." We talked about how that gift of God that is in us is supposed to shine for others to see through our words and actions so that we may live them over for Christ. My parents came for dinner and the kids played outside afterwards. It was hard for all of us to send them in to get ready for bed because none of us were quite ready for summer to be over.

They weren't too excited to get up the next morning, but we did pretty well, got our pictures done and out the door on time. We dropped off Jackson and Ellie first. While waiting in line, Ellie saw her friend, Lydia, get out of the car in front of us, so Ellie quickly said goodbye and jumped out, ditching Jackson. Jackson just waited until we got to our usual spot and casually got out. Then we went to Ray Miller and Lincoln asked me to walk him in, so the twins and I did. And finally, we made our way to the Primary and walked the twins in and showed them where to sit and said our goodbyes. Bennett's eyes were starting to water a little bit, but they were good. Then I headed outside and went for a run.

The rest of the day went by quickly. Andrew and I met for lunch and after not quite finishing everything I wanted to do that day, it was soon time to pick everyone up. They all had good days, but were tired. We met the Vincents at Dairy Queen on our way home, although I felt bad that Jackson wasn't with us as he had practice. Friday was much of the same and they were excited to have ninjas in the dark that night. Tiffany and Mike set up a table with snacks and we all brought some more. The kids all dressed up in their black and enjoyed some s'mores before they turned on The Greatest Showman, which the kids watched for a little bit while us adults sat down and visited. Then they were off to play their games. We called it quits a little after 10 and started cleaning up. It was a fun night for all of them and I was sad we didn't get a picture of them all dressed up in their black.

Andrew took the kids out to the ranch Saturday morning and I got busy cleaning the house. And just about the time they got home, Lissy called to see if we wanted to meet her and Molly at La Fuente for lunch. It was move-in day for Truman so it was very busy and we ended up outside with only one working umbrella so it was kind of hot. Then we went to my parents house and the kids swam for a little bit, although we kind of had to force them. We had dinner there that evening and went home later that night after we got to enjoy some of my dad's peanut butter cookies and oatmeal applesauce cookies. Yum! My dad did get a call that night from Andy saying he had been having some back and abdominal pain and my dad thought he may have a kidney stone and told him to go to the ER. We later got the news that he actually had appendicitis and they were keeping in the hospital overnight and planning to do surgery the next morning. My parents ended up heading to KC the next day when they got the news that they were worried that it may have partially ruptured, they put him on antibiotics and put off surgery until the afternoon to let the antibiotics do their work. When he went into surgery later in the afternoon, they discovered he had a stone that had caused gangrene in part of the appendix and they were worried about him becoming septic. Thankfully the surgery was successful and my parents were able to head home. At home, we went to church, grocery shopping and then spent some time organizing some things for this year's De Ronde race. Then that evening, we ended up with a lot of kids and dogs in our yard. I tried to get a picture of all of the, but it didn't quite work. We added a few more kids when we had a little practice for Lincoln's flag football team for the Showme Showdown. Leah had a new boy in town join the team and we got to meet his parents, who seemed very nice. But, then it was time to call it a night and get ready to start a new week.
