We had our usual Wednesday getting things ready for small
group. It rained off and on during the
day which I welcomed because our patio needed a good washing after our
get-together last Friday night. The sun
did peek out every now and then so the kids got to enjoy seeing a double
rainbow that evening. I let the twins
sit out on the front porch to see it and they decided they wanted to play in
the rain again. Thankfully it was just
sprinkling at that point because small group was starting up and I didn’t have
time to change them.
We were off of our game Thursday morning. My alarm clock went off at 5:45 but I didn’t
get up. I checked my email and weather
on my phone to see if I would be able to get my grocery shopping in that
morning. Then I heard little footsteps
and the door opened-it was one of the twins.
I couldn’t tell at first but I pulled him up into bed with me. It was still dark, so I felt around for his “bear”
and discovered that it was Miles. I
enjoyed just laying there with him and time slipped by so that it was too late
to run. I got up to shower about 6:45
and when I got out I realized that the other kids still weren’t up. I have not had to get them up most of the
school year because they have done a good job waking up to their alarm
clocks. I got them new ones that
automatically set the time and only go off on the weekdays. We had some storms last night and they may have
messed up the clocks because the times were all wrong. So the rush was on to get everyone up, ready
and lunches made before it was time for them to leave for school. Then I finished getting the twins and I ready
so we could do our grocery shopping before the rain started again. We were able to get most of it done but had
it rain on us a bit as we were leaving Wal-Mart. Plus I had planned to stop by the donut shop
and surprise Andrew and the kids with some donuts, so we had to do that in the
rain too. At least it wasn’t pouring
down. And the afternoon went pretty well. After lunch I decided to work on getting an
extension cord through our new cubbies so I could have a power strip under one
of our desks. This meant drilling
through several of the cubbies on the bottom and it took a little more work
than I thought it would. Which also
meant it took a little more time while the kids ran around entertaining
themselves. Alex was here and they
played flashlight tag in the basement for a bit. Then they were upstairs running around when
Miles came to tell me that Bennett hit his head. But I didn’t hear much crying so I continued working. After I finished up and was putting stuff
away, Lincoln informed me that Bennett’s head was bleeding and sure enough it
was. Nothing too drastic but he did have
blood all over his forehead. So I
cleaned him up and was able to get a look at his cut. It wasn’t too big and the bleeding was
slowing down so I didn’t worry about it too much. Then it was time to figure out what had blood
on it which included a pillow and a spot on the couch. Then I decided it was time for them to calm
down a bit but had decided not to do naps that day. I did let them have their pacifiers along
with their bears and blankets and turned on Polar Express for them. It didn’t take long and Miles was
asleep. Bennett laid there with him for
a bit but never went to sleep. Miles was
the one that was up early that morning.
Jackson and Ellie had swim practice after school and then
we had to actually eat dinner inside that night since it was cool and rainy
outside. I am sad to see that end. After I cleaned up from dinner I ran to
Westlakes to look for a trim piece for the desks my dad is making for our
office. He was hard at work when I
dropped them off-again so grateful that he is doing this for us. And everything was looking great.
Friday was another dreary day. It didn’t rain but it was overcast and much
cooler. I decided to make an apple cake
to take over to my parents the next day since Andy and Autumn were coming into
town. I guess I didn’t do a good enough
job greasing the pan because it just came out in clumps. I just couldn’t bring myself to take it over
to them. It still tasted good though.
We went to Luke’s birthday party that evening out at
Matthew and Kristin’s. Kristin did a
great job with the Batman theme and had some cute decorations. The kids had a lot of fun exploring all the
toys and playing together. Miles and
Bennett found a baby doll that they enjoyed taking care of. And they even had the Cardinals game on. The score was quickly 6-1 in favor of the
Dodgers so I think most people had already written the Cardinals off. But then they had an amazing comeback which
was fun to watch. We were able to catch
the last part of the game on the radio driving home and the Cardinals ended up
winning 10-9. When we got home we had to
actually turn on our heat since the temperatures were supposed to get down to freezing
that night-boo.
Andrew went to work Saturday morning and I had an early
morning visit from these two.
Andrew got back just in time for me to take Lincoln to
his soccer game. Since it was cold and
windy we decided to just have Andrew stay at home with the other kids while I
took Lincoln since I ended up missing his game the weekend before because of my
race. Lincoln was fine with it as long
as I had some hot chocolate. And I was
glad I did. It was COLD! The wind just whips through those soccer
fields. Lincoln did a great job
though. He did spend a lot of time just
running beside the ball but he finally got in there and never complained about
the cold. After we got home, Andrew
decided to take all of the kids out to the ranch while I got stuff done around
the house. I also had Andrew put the
bike on the trainer so I got a bike ride in.
After I finished and was stretching out, I look up to see my dad walking
by with one of the desks he had built. I
didn’t even hear him come in. It didn’t
take him too long to get them set up. He
had to take the trim off for one desk and then we just attached the second desk
to the trim. My dad did such a great job
and it looked great. Andrew and the kids
got back as he was finishing up. Then
after my dad left I cleaned up the room, put up some stuff on the walls and brought
the chairs in. I loved it and I find myself
just standing in the doorway looking at it.
There are a few odd and ends things to finish up but not much. My dad is making a couple shelves to put up
beside the cubbies to hold my sewing machine and Silhouette. I also have some new baskets coming and I
think I want to put the kids’ names in vinyl on the cubbies. I hung up a map that Ellie brought home from
school last year. It isn’t anything
fancy but I like the bright colors and for the kids to have a chance to explore
the geography. I also hung up a bulletin
board I had down in our old office. I
haven’t updated anything on it in a long time.
It has some fun memories on it. I
have a note from Molly from when I got married and samples of the nursery
bedding from when I first picked it out when I was pregnant with Jackson. There is also the slip from the fortune
cookies we used to tell our family we were pregnant with Jackson that said, “There
will be a new addition to your family in the near future.” I kept that stuff up there along with a few
pictures but I also want to use it for some of the kids notes from school.
After I finished up, we loaded up the kids and headed to
my parents. We got there just as Andy
and Autumn were leaving with Finley to get ready for a wedding they were going
to that night. Briley and Baylor stayed
at my parents because they were going with us to see the Harlem Wizards a
little later. My mom had made soup so we
had that for dinner. It was delicious. Then Andrew took the twins home while my
parents and I took the rest of the kids to the game. Ellie’s school brought in the Harlem Wizards
as a fundraiser for the school instead of their Family Fun Night. The team played against of team of local “celebrities”
and it provided for some fun entertainment.
They did some tricks, interacted with the crowd and played some fun
basketball. The kids knew quite a few of
the local team and they had fun watching them play too. So overall it was a fun night for them and I
think they may have made enough that is could be the only fundraiser for the school
year which would be awesome. So we
dropped my parents, Briley and Baylor off at their house and headed home. The kids went to bed and I was going to watch
the Cardinals game only to find out that it wasn’t on. So I kept track of it online and sadly they
lost. But now they get to come back to
St. Louis.
Sunday was a busy but fun day. Andrew went to the office again in the
morning and came home so we could get to the early church service. Then I did a quick grocery shopping trip
afterwards, rushed to get it all put away and then met up with Andy and Autumn
and their kids at the Corn Maze. They
have added several different things over the years so the kids had a lot to
keep them entertained. The twins
immediately started riding around in the powered vehicles. They were on them pretty much the whole time. They did spend some time in the bounce house
and a pit filled with corn kernels and toy tractors. The older kids did most of the activities-the
bounce house, straw pile, large slide, corn maze and wagon ride. The weather was great and the sun was
shining. It was nice to get to spend
time with Andy and Autumn and let the kids play.
Then it was time to head home. Ellie’s pant got mud on them so we had to
stop by home so she could change. Then
we dropped her off at Leisure World for Kate’s birthday party and then went to
my parents for more soup for lunch. We
hung out there for a bit and showed Andy and Autumn some videos and pictures
from our trip. Then Andrew took Jackson
home so they could mow the yard and Andy’s family headed back to Kansas
City. And then I had to pick up Ellie
and we headed home. It was just a tad
bit chilly but I thought it was still nice enough to eat outside again. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs then
Andrew found some wood and I found my stash for impromptu s’mores roasts and we
got to enjoy some s’mores for dessert.
Miles and Bennett enjoyed a little independence and roasting
marshmallows. They never ate the ones
they roasted because they just let them catch on fire, but they had fun. But then it was time to head in and get ready
for the new school week. It was a great
fall weekend though!
