February Has Come and Gone

It hasn't been quite a month since my last post but we've have kept busy in spite of the yucky weather that makes you want to just snuggle up inside. We finished up all of our basketball seasons. Ellie and I's team hoped to go out with a couple wins since our last two games were against a team we beat earlier in the season and a team we almost beat. But it was not to be and we lost both of them. I was feeling a bit defeated that we weren't able to have more of an impact on the girls and I thought the parents were upset. But then our last "game" was the Mother-Daughter game and a few of the moms told me they thought the girls really improved this season...not sure about "really improved" but there had to be a little bit :-). The Mother-Daughter game was fun as always...I'll miss it. And thankfully we all came out of it with just minor injuries. My knee is still scraped up. Our last event of the season was a pizza party for the players and coaches. We are grateful for the opportunity for Jackson and Ellie to play at MI. I don't think Lincoln will get to because they have a big group of boys around his age already.

Lincoln had a couple more weekends of basketball. They played a couple games in Schuyler one Saturday. I only got to watch one as the twins also had a game and Ellie had some make-up dance lessons we had to get her too. He did a great job and has definitely seen some improvement. Leslie was nice enough to send me a couple videos of some great shots Lincoln had. And they finally beat the Schuyler team, so they were excited about that. The next weekend was the Show-Me games in Columbia and they didn't fare as well there. We ended up leaving all the kids but Lincoln with my parents since the twins had a game and Ellie was going to help Lissy with some photo shoots. Lincoln had three games on Saturday and one of them was against Tyler's team. That was the only game we won. The other teams we played were from Jeff City and Columbia, so definitely a larger selection of talent there. We stayed overnight and even got our hotel room comped. We had a room at one hotel and they ended up sending an email on Saturday letting me know they overbooked and didn't have a room for us, but got us a room at another Marriott hotel and were covering the expenses. It turned out great for us :-). We had Cheddars for lunch and then Panera for dinner so we could eat quickly before we picked up our Sam's order and head back to the gym. We saw Julie and Jeff there and they were getting ready to go to a concert. After the last game of the night, we got some Andy's custard and went to Academy Sports. Lincoln had another game at 9 Sunday morning. They held on longer than I expected, but couldn't pull out a win and were done with the tournament. It was a good season for him and he looks forward to doing it again next year.

The twins had a game while we were in Columbia and my mom sent me a video. It is just fun to watch them work with each other. The twins had their last game of the season this past Saturday. They don't realize that their official last game is next week, but we are going to be out of town. They were sad it was their last game but are looking forward to the 3on3 tournament where they et to play with a couple of their classmates.

Jackson officially started track season this past week. It is hard to believe his first track meet is just a couple weeks away as I type this with more snow coming down outside. He has spent the last few weeks trying to perfect a front flip and he hopes with that and the lifting he is doing with Andrew, that he will see improvements in his high jump and hurdles.

The weather hasn't been kind to us and we actually just had our first full week this last week with no snow days since coming back from Christmas break. As much as they enjoy days off from school, I think the kids are done with it too...it was hard to go back after 7 days off-our longest stretch. Other things we have been up to in the mean time are, Ellie took a Safe Sitter class over President's Day and learned a lot. She continues to love her sewing classes with Mrs. Hardee and wants to continue on for 6 more weeks. We celebrated Valentine's Day together. They were off school many days before Valentine's Day, so while their valentine's were all ready to go, the teachers were hustling last minute to get stuff planned. I ended up planning some games for the twins' class last-minute, just trying to use what I had at the house. And they ended up really liking them. One was putting numbers on Valentine's plates (nothing fancy) and they used these hearts that I had on little sticks as "cupids arrows" to throw at the plates and see who could get the most points with 4 throws. The other was I wrote different things to do on the back of heart doilies (foam hearts definitely would have been better, but again, just going with what I had at home) and we laid them in a circle and played music. When the music stopped, you picked up the heart and did what it said to do from giving your neighbor a fist bump, to dancing like a robot, to hopping on one foot. They worked and I'll definitely keep them in mind for next year. Before I went to their party, we had our first small group of the year. I made red velvet cake with little red chocolate hearts. After that, I quickly made some sugar cookies, went for lunch with Andrew at Mi Casa (where they gave us little sopapillas for free for dessert) and then went to the twins party. After school and Jackson was back from weights, I let them open their mailboxes which included some candy and photo luggage tags to put on their bags for our spring break trip to Tampa. Andrew gave me roses and I gave him some more Nespresso capsules and several bike items he had on a "wish list". It was pizza for dinner and then off to Schuyler County for a basketball game. Lincoln had his party the next day and I didn't have to do anything for it but show up and help put some food out. That night, we went out to eat at Maxwell's with Annie and Brad while our older kids watched our younger kids at our house.

I got to take the twins to their 1st grade PJ math night one night. They had different math activities set up in different classrooms and we rotated through those for about 45 minutes before we went to the commons area for the reason they were all there...each class had a jar of candy and you had to guess how many pieces were in it and whoever was closest, got the jar. The twins' buddy, Jack, got it and he was so nice to be make sure he shared some with his friends.

The kids and I got to help pack Buddy Packs one night. Andrew had been in trial all that day and had some stuff to catch up on and couldn't join us. The Vincents and LaBeths were doing it too and I think our initial welcome with the kids was a little icy, but then they realized that they were actually useful and it turned out great. The twins stayed by me and took turns pulling the bags off the tabs and putting 2 cans of beans and rice in, next we handed it to Lincoln and Alex who put milk in and then Ellie did bags of cereal followed by Jackson with animal crackers. They had two assembly lines going and we packed 1100 bags in 1 1/2 hours. We would definitely do it again if they would let us.

Before the twins basketball game on Saturday, I took them and Lincoln to K-Life's KClassic. It was a smaller group, but the volunteers did a great job of making it fun for all the kids and they had a blast spending a couple hours running around playing different games. A great way to blow off some energy on a Saturday.

As I mentioned, we started up bible study again. The book is Free of Me, which has been great so far. The prep for discussion is more time-consuming though, so I just need to make sure I give myself enough time. And a lot of my time has been taken up with TriFAHL planning. It seems like once we get over one hurdle, another pops up. So there has been a lot of time spent communicating with others, researching polices, solutions and ideas, producing and putting out all of our information and trying to not step on peoples' toes. Thankfully, Andrew and the kids are supportive and I have a great group I'm working with, but the doubt definitely creeps in as to why am I doing this and is this even going to work. We had our first seminar Sunday night and had a decent turnout with 16 people there. It was just a basic informational seminar and I think it went pretty well.

And then I signed up for an Olympic-distance triathlon in St. Louis that is May 19th, so I really need to get my rear in gear as far as training. I workout, I'm just not putting in the miles that I need to do to prepare for it as it seems I'm always rushing through everything. Buddy was not impressed with my workout either.
