Family Weekend in St. Louis

This past week went by so quickly and ended with a bang. Monday I helped in Lincoln’s classroom again. Monday mornings they do their weekend news and write what they did over the weekend in their journal. Then they read it to their groups and do a class cheer. Mrs. Banner was listening in on Lincoln’s group when he talked about me doing a triathlon over the weekend and that I won. So, she stopped the class and asked me if I had done just that. Then they chose a class cheer to do for me…fireworks 😊. Later that morning, I helped the class pick out books at the book fair. They earned enough money with their Christmas shop to each buy one book under $5 and then a local Rotary club was paying for each child in the school to get a book. Decisions, decisions. After about 20 minutes, they had their books picked out and we headed back to the classroom where the they got to look through them for a little bit.

Jackson had baseball that night and Ellie and Lincoln had soccer. Tuesday morning, I had hoped to get a bike and run in outside, but some rain popped up and kept me inside. It wasn’t too much rain and the kids were still able to have baseball practice that night. The twins practice time changed, so instead of practicing on Fridays and Saturdays, they switched it to Tuesdays and Saturdays. So, the twins and Lincoln both had practice at 5. We got Lincoln to his field first and then made our way over to the twins’ field. It was warmer this time around, so both boys were cooperative and did a great job.
When the twins were done, we went back to Lincoln’s field and he practiced another 15 minutes or so. In the meantime, Ellie caught a ride to the field with Lauren’s mom since they were on the same team. Her practice started at 6:30. I took the boys home and then came back to get Ellie in a little bit. On the way back to the ballpark, I stopped by my parents to give my mom all the tickets I had organized for our St. Louis trip coming up that weekend. Ellie and Lauren finished up a little after I got to their field. Ellie seemed very apprehensive-I don’t think she had the best practice. She felt like Joe was yelling at her for some bad throws and one of the balls he hit out into the field, hit her on the knee pretty hard and it was hurting. We’ll see how this year goes, but I have a feeling it may be her last.

Wednesday brought quite a bit of rain. It was just a dreary day. I was able to get a swim in though and worked on cleaning the house and prepping for small group. I was excited that my replacement Garmin came in, so I took some time to get that all set up. With all the rain, all of our practices for the night were canceled. Well, Ellie’s soccer didn’t officially cancel, but Lincoln’s did. I decided it wasn’t worth it for Ellie to go practice out in the cold rain. Thursday morning was bible study. I was up early to make some cinnamon rolls for the group and the dough didn’t rise as much as I had hoped during the night, so I was messing with those and only got a short run in. The cinnamon rolls did actually turn out though, so I was happy about that.

Ellie and Lincoln had their last Little K of the year after school. While they were there, I took the twins to their Kindergarten open house. They had several different activities to complete and if they did all of them, they got a free shirt. They did a screening, checked out the library, got a cookie and milk from the lunch area and ate in the commons, visited a classroom and got to check out a bus. They enjoyed it all more than I thought they would and I think are a little less apprehensive about heading to kindergarten in the fall.

Friday was our day to head to St. Louis. But first a rode on the trainer and did a quick treadmill run before finishing up packing and picking up the house. We started picking up kids from school at 1:30 and were on the road close to 2. We were able to check into our hotel in St. Louis before meeting everyone down at the stadium. It had rained a lot over the last few days, so we were hoping the game would still be on. The rain cleared out for the most part and we got to see a great game. We all met up on the deck area near out seats and ate some dinner before the game started. On our way in, the adults received garden gnomes. Jackson decided to get rid of the box his came in and accidentally threw the whole thing away and was digging in the trash trying to get it. Thankfully, an attendant came by and opened the trashcan for him :-). And we convinced some lucky lady to take a big group picture of us. It was so great having everyone there. Most of the kids sat together with us adults scattered behind them. It did start raining for just a little bit, but we had the perfect seats because they were covered. We got to see a couple home runs and the kids loved cheering everyone on. We ended up leaving at the top of the 8th and we were ahead 7-1. By the time we got back to our hotel, they were only up 7-5. Not quite sure how that happened, but I’m glad we left when we did. They did end up winning. And on the way to the car, Bennett was holding my hand and told me, "Thank you, Mom. That was the best night ever."

The next morning brought more rain. We all ate breakfast at the hotel before heading to the church for Bella’s First Communion. Thankfully, it wasn’t totally pouring when we needed to get into the church. We went to Sara’s house after church and helped her finish putting the food out for a quick celebratory brunch. She had a cake for Bella and a cookie cake to celebrate all the April/May birthdays. It was all nice, but quick, since we had to head to The Lion King at the Fox. We all made it down there in good time but then hit a roadblock with our tickets. None of them were scanning and said they had been returned. Once we got all the tickets, we were able to go with one of the escorts to the box office and get things figured out. I guess I printed off the tickets for the purchase we had originally made that we ended up canceling. Lissy helped set up another order and used my card to pay for them. She actually received tickets in the mail, but I wasn’t aware of that. They were what we needed. She gave them to my mom, but they both just assumed they were extras and left them in the car. Thankfully, they were able to print off the tickets again and we raced up to or seats and got seated just before the show was supposed to start. But it ended up starting a little late, which worked out for us. Some of us had seen the show before, but still enjoyed watching it again and the kids seemed to enjoy it. I did find myself trying to doze off a bit here and there during it though.

After the show was over, it was thankfully just drizzling a bit and we were able to get back to our car easily. We said our goodbyes to Ellie who was going with my parents to Louisville for Carolina’s recital. We were lucky to get through 61 because they closed part of it the next day. And we made a last-minute decision to stop at AJ’s for dinner and Jackson was very excited. We were able to get in and out pretty quickly and got back home around 9:30. Andrew had thought about going hunting the next morning, but it was cold and rained off and on. He went to the office and Lincoln went with him. The twins put on their construction gear and decided they wanted to build some stuff, but first they wanted to draw up some plans. So, I gave them each a notebook to work with and they had all sorts of plans.

Then he came home and decided it was a good day to build the storage shelves for the garage. So he and Jackson got to work measuring and coming up with a plan before making a trip to Home Depot to get their supplies. I picked up a few tools of my dad’s and they got to work. And since the twins were already in “worker” mode, they thought they could help out too. I worked on cleaning, unpacking, laundry and all that other fun stuff most of the day. They took a break for dinner and then I hit up Aldi, Home Depot and Wal-Mart while they went back to work. They finished up around 9:30 and they did a great job. I’m excited to get everything organized on it. But first there was quite a mess to clean up and I started working on it while waiting for Ellie to get back. When she got home around 11, it was time to get to bed.
